What is a Roofer?

A Roofer builds, repairs, and replaces roofs on homes, shops, and other buildings. They tear off old shingles, lay underlayment, fasten shingles, tiles, or metal panels, seal flashing around vents and chimneys, and work high up in changing weather. Their work keeps buildings dry, insulated, and protected from leaks and damage.

Job requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must attest in writing that they are physically capable of performing the work of a Roofer, including repetitive heavy lifting, kneeling, squatting, and walking; climbing and working off ladders and scaffolds; working from high heights which may require wearing safety protective equipment; working in extreme temperatures and severe weather conditions including extreme cold and heat; and working while wearing respirators.
  • Must sign a statement indicating that they are residents within the jurisdiction of JATC for the Roofing Industry of Rochester, Local Union #22, including Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, and/or Yates counties.
  • Must have reliable means of transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the USA.
  • May be required to pass a drug screening, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
