What is a Roofer?

A Roofer builds, repairs, and replaces roofs on homes, shops, and other buildings. They tear off old shingles, lay underlayment, fasten shingles, tiles, or metal panels, seal flashing around vents and chimneys, and work high up in changing weather. Their work keeps buildings dry, insulated, and protected from leaks and damage.

Job requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have completed at least 10th grade education.
  • Must achieve a minimum score of 40 points on the evaluation form to be placed on the rank list.
  • Must sign a statement and be physically able to perform Roofer work, including lifting 70 pounds, working at heights on low-pitch and steep roofing, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and working in hot and cold weather.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from various job sites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to enrollment in apprenticeship.
